WHAT: The annual Anglican Red Mass is offered each year at Emmanuel Anglican Church in October to mark the opening of the new judicial year. The service traces its beginnings to medieval Europe where the established church in a country hosted these special services that call upon the intercession of God the Holy Spirit to inspire and enable all those in the legal profession to execute justice. It is called a Red Mass because of the traditional scarlet robes worn by justices of the court and the red vestments worn by the clergy during a votive mass to the Holy Spirit (red is the color of the Holy Spirit).  Frequently, the clergy and justices are joined by university law professors in their academic doctoral gowns. In England today the Roman Catholic judges assemble at the Westminster Cathedral for one celebration, while a short distance away in ancient Westminster Abbey, the jurists of the Anglican Church and other Christian denominations attend an Anglican Eucharist. In the United States where there is no established church both Anglican Churches and Roman Catholic Churches hold Red Masses.

QUÉ: La Misa Roja anglicana se celebra anualmente en la Iglesia Anglicana Emmanuel durante el mes de octubre para marcar el inicio del nuevo año judicial. Esta ceremonia tiene sus raíces en la Europa medieval, donde la iglesia oficial de cada país organizaba estos servicios especiales para invocar la intercesión de Dios Espíritu Santo, con el fin de inspirar y capacitar a los miembros de la profesión jurídica para impartir justicia. Se le llama "Misa Roja" debido a las tradicionales togas escarlata que visten los magistrados y a los ornamentos rojos que utiliza el clero durante una misa votiva al Espíritu Santo (el rojo es el color del Espíritu Santo). A menudo, al clero y a los magistrados se unen profesores universitarios de derecho que visten sus togas académicas de doctorado. En la Inglaterra actual, los jueces católicos romanos se reúnen en la Catedral de Westminster para una celebración, mientras que, a poca distancia, en la histórica Abadía de Westminster, los juristas de la Iglesia Anglicana y de otras denominaciones cristianas asisten a una Eucaristía anglicana. En los Estados Unidos, donde no existe una iglesia oficial, tanto las iglesias anglicanas como las católicas romanas celebran Misas Rojas.
